Integrative health care - a holistic approach to future wellness
Can conventional medicine and complementary services join forces more efficiently to create a better health care system?
That’s exactly what the Integrative Health Convention 2022 is set to explore this Friday, 11 February
As we move steadily into 2022, with many initial overzealous New Year resolutions abandoned, there remains an overall sense that people want to leave the stresses and worries of the past two years behind us to become healthier and happier.
Collectively there is a strong sense that people are ready to embrace physical and mental wellness and take practical and positive steps to get there.
There are many routes people can take to begin to move towards a more positive approach to their wellness, but sometimes the choice can seem overwhelming.
Social media is awash with advertisements for complementary and alternative health options, but it’s very hard to know which ones are for real, which ones do nothing, and which ones are downright dangerous.
On the other side of the coin, despite conventional medicine’s growing strengths, it has its limitations and there are more and more lifestyle-related problems that are preventable, controllable and reversible than ever before, yet many of these problems remain untreated.
Step forward: Integrative Health
Integrative health brings conventional and complementary approaches together in GP approved formats.
It’s an approach that guides us so that we can combine conventional medicine, lifestyle changes, physical rehabilitation, psychotherapy, and complementary health approaches in various combinations.
The benefit here is that everything works together with an emphasis on treating the whole person rather than one part of the mind or body.
Supported by an ever-increasing number of doctors and therapists alike, integrative health practitioners champion the need for well-coordinated care between different healthcare providers and institutions so that by bringing conventional and complementary approaches together they are able to care for the whole person.
Practical applications – an example
Here’s an example that surprises many people: Did you know that it’s not uncommon for hospitals in the UK have operations cancelled due to last minute patient nerves?
This not only puts an additional strain on the NHS but also means that some patients never get the treatment they need.
Integrative health practitioners train health professionals in NLP, hypnotherapy and other mental relaxation techniques, providing new skills to help patients to cope with their fear of the operating table or needle phobia, resulting in reduced cancellations – which is better for the NHS and for patients alike.
